Detox – Why Should I?

Detoxification is no longer a lifestyle choice! In today’s ever-increasing toxic world, doing a natural detox is just common-sense medicine.

Did you know:

  • We are exposed to toxins every minute of our day, and they are affecting us all in astonishing ways.
  • Toxins enter the bloodstream through food, water, paint fumes, carbon-based antibiotics and many other things we might have in our homes.
  • Toxins can interfere with every tissue in the body, as well as severely affecting mental health in both young and old.
  • Toxins can bring on metabolic diseases; cancer, diabetes, heart and auto-immune disease, Alzheimer’s and many, many more.
  • Over 350 new chemicals enter our environment every single year.

It is no surprise then that there has been a nationwide increase in the rates of lifestyle-based medical conditions, with only 1.5% of our population considered to be ‘healthy’.

Are you ready for the worst part?

From pesticides and herbicides in your food to heavy metals in your skincare, all the chemicals that inhabit our bodies can alter our metabolism and poison our weight-control mechanisms.

As chemical toxicity increases in our bodies, the need for detoxification becomes ever-more critical.

These chemicals are typically lipid-soluble, meaning they like to live in fat. So we pile on the pounds, and we don’t even know why.

The detoxification process is harder for those who carry excess weight.

The body putting on more fat is a major source of inflammation. Since it is now medically recognised that so many chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease and cancer, are the direct results of inflammation, it is imperative to address this in a discussion on weight. As we lose weight, we release toxins from the fat into the bloodstream, which overwhelms the normal functioning of the body. This can cause you to feel quite awful.

Why you should!

When it comes to detox, understanding the ‘why’ is one thing but understanding the ‘how’ can be quite another.

We can’t get away from environmental toxicity, so we have to fight back.

To ‘get well’, it is necessary to address symptoms and conditions that reveal toxicity in the body. It will be far harder for a sick body to heal if it is already fighting a constant battle to detox itself.

The more accustomed your body is to the detoxification process, the less shocked it will be by these chemicals entering the bloodstream in the weight loss process and the more successful you will be. So, cut out the middleman and detox!

Listen to your body! If you are suffering from any of the following symptoms, then you need to detox:

  • Headaches
  • Unexplained fever, chills
  • Fatigue
  • Persistent coughs or frequent colds
  • Nosebleeds
  • Nasal congestion
  • Worsening asthma
  • Skin rashes
  • Pain throughout the body and muscles
  • Difficulty with digestion
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Depression

What Can I do?

There’s no need to spend a fortune on subscriptions to various ‘teatoxes’ or inject some up-and-coming herb into your eyeballs. There are simple, everyday changes you can make to kick-start detoxification.

How To Detox.

There are many methods of detoxification that have been circulating for a long time — saunas, baths, sweats, enzyme therapy, energy healing work, herbs and functional foods.

Many detoxification methods will be associated with particular organs and might not be appropriate for everyone, so research is essential. In light of this, I can offer some techniques and advice for detoxification that are safe for everyone.

Dr Sandy’s five simple rules to an Optimal Detoxification Health and Weight Programme (For Everyone):

1 Oxygenation & Hydration – Breathing & Drinking!

So simple! Water can help flush toxins out of your body. Imagine cleaning your floor with a dry mop. You might achieve some results, but you would achieve far more if you added warm water. Our bodies are no different.

You should be taking in half your body weight in ounces of water per day!

Keep breathing. Some toxins are volatile, meaning they can be expelled through a breath cycle. You can literally blow those toxins away!

2 Meals that supply fibre, high-quality protein and complex carbs.

The detox process is a tough job for our bodies and requires the right fuel. Add some clean protein sources to your diet, or grab a protein shake!

3 Exercise – gentle movement for ten minutes per day.

Movement gets the blood moving around the body and can help release toxins stored in fat cells. Gentle exercise is safe for everyone, but extreme exercise is not appropriate for many. Listen to your body.

4 Sleep.

We should all be striving for eight hours of uninterrupted snoozing. Recent studies have shown people who get less than eight hours of sleep per night have an increased appetite for simple carbs and sugar.

5 Stress Management.

This goes hand-in-hand with sleep. If you’re stressed, you probably aren’t sleeping. If you’re not sleeping, then you will have increased levels of cortisol which will be affecting your adrenals and making you more stressed!

Finding ways to help relieve your stress are invaluable, be that through exercise, supplements, or just taking some extra time for yourself.

I would also like to attend to the topic of induction. The induction of a diet and letting your body know that “we are about to lose weight” can be extremely valuable. Start by introducing a high vegetable diet in preparation for a juice cleanse. Increase your fibre intake with green leafy veggies, or introduce a probiotic. All of these are a great warm-up to the detoxification process, and even these changes alone can create weight loss.

Now you know:

  • Why detox is no longer a lifestyle choice.
  • Some symptoms to look out for.
  • A little about why you might be putting on ‘unexplained’ weight.
  • And you know my five simple and safe rules to kickstart the detoxification process!

Though the detox methods I have shared with you are safe for everyone, to assume that one size fits all can be quite dangerous. Please do not just pick up any old detox product from your health food store. Our bodies are unique, and our detox programmes should be too.
